We’re gonna have to wait quite a bit longer to see the next film fromRichard Linklater. Again. TheBoyhoodfilmmaker’s adaptation of theMaria SemplenovelWhere’d You Go Bernadettewas shot back in 2017 and originally scheduled for release by Annapurna Pictures in May 2018. The film was then pushed back to October 2018, a seemingly more appropriate release date for aCate Blanchett-fronted character piece directed by Linklater. But then the release date was bumped once more to August 13, 2025, and now Annapurna has changed its mind yet again, pushing theWhere’d You Go Bernadetterelease date to July 27, 2025.
Blanchett plays an artist who suddenly goes missing, leaving it up to her husband and 15-year-old daughter to track her down. The first trailerdropped last month and revealed a much more comedic and potentially commercial film than some were expecting, and perVarietythis latest release date move was to take advantage of a date that’s been a solid launching pad for female-driven films likeCrazy Rich Asians,Florence Foster Jenkins, andJulia and Julia.

To be fair, the March 22nd date was already insanely crowded withJordan Peele’sUs, theMatthew McConaughey-frontedBeach Bum, and theTom HanksmovieGreyhoundalready setting up shop. On the new August release date, the film will work as solid counterprogramming to Disney’s kids fantasyArtemis Fowl, the horror adaptationScary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and the untitled new film fromHereditarydirectorAri Aster.
And to be frank, Annapurna needs a hit. The studio began self-distributing with 2017’sDetroit, a financial disappointment, and last year’sThe Sisters Brothersmanaged to pull in only $3 million despite having a cast full of recognizable faces. If Beale Street Could Talkis in the midst of a very slow rollout (it’s currently at $8 million), butViceis proving to be the studio’s biggest hit thus far, currently standing at $37 million. CanWhere’d You Go Bernadettefind the same kind of success that other female-driven films found in August? We’ll find out in five months.
Next up for Annapurna is LAIKA’s new filmMissing Linkin April andOlivia Wilde’s directorial debutBooksmartin May. For a complete list of 2019 movie release dates, click here.
