Chris Hemsworthis one of Marvel’s most experienced stars now, having been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the highest-grossing franchise in history — for nearly 15 years. Hemsworth debuted withThor, which was released back in 2011 as a part of the MCU’s first “phase” of movies. The originalThorgrossed around $181 million at the domestic box office, a number that has now been overtaken by Marvel’s latest offering,Thunderbolts*.Directed byJake Schreier,Thunderbolts*is still among the MCU’s lowest-grossing movies, even three weeks into its theatrical run.

The movie will likely bow out of theaters with under $200 million domestically and $400 million worldwide. This wouldn’t be a good result for the superhero team-up film, whichreportedly cost $180 million to produce. Directed byKenneth Branagh, the originalThorcost a reported $150 million, which was a fairly standard tent pole figure at the time. The movie earned mostly positive reviews, and currently holds a “fresh” 77%Rotten Tomatoes score. Curiously enough, the version of Thor that was introduced in the first film all those years ago has little resemblance to the character now.

AfterTaika Waitititook over the franchise with 2017’sThor: Ragnarok, the God of Thunder has been presented as a more comedic figure. Hemsworth has played the character in four solo films and four Avengers movies. He’ll reprise the role in the upcomingAvengers: Doomsday, as willFlorence Pughand herThunderbolts* cast-mates. Released last month, the movie has made around a million dollars more thanThorat the domestic box office, but is still trailing behind the vast majority of the MCU’s movies.

‘Thunderbolts*’ Has Sadly Underperformed Commercially, Despite Positive Reviews

It opened to positive reviews, however, and currently holds an 88%Rotten Tomatoes score. Audience reception was positive as well, with the movie’s audience score on the aggregator website standing at an even better 93%.Marvel Studios has been having a difficult run at the box office in the last few years; for every hit likeDeadpool & Wolverine, there is a flop likeAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.Thunderbolts*still hasn’t overtaken Florence Pugh’s MCU debut in theBlack Widowmovie, which made $183 million domestically despite having been released day-and-date on the Disney+ streaming service during the pandemic. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
