Terry Gilliamdoes not do anything the conventional way. You have only to take a cursory look at his body of work to see that this is the case. But for the Gilliam Faithful who have been waiting upwards of five years since his last effort, 2013’sThe Zero Theorem, today brings us a video that rewards their patience and celebrates the Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s unconventionality. At long last, the first trailer forThe Man Who Killed Don Quixoteis now here!
The last we heard from Gilliam, the movie had wrapped production, but this was about a year ago. The relatively short time period of one year between wrapping production and moving into post is a blink of the eye where this project is concerned; Gilliam has been developing a take onMiguel de Cervantes y Saavedra’s acclaimed novel since the 90s with such famous folks asJohnny Deppinvolved. The closest that disastrous attempt got to appearing on the big screen was the 2002 documentaryLost in La Manchathat chronicled the production’s catastrophe. Now, with Amazon Studios on board,The Man Who Killed Don Quixoteis finally set to ride.

StarringJonathan Pryce,Adam Driver,Olga Kurylenko,Stellan SkarsgårdandJordi Mollà, Amazon Studios will be distributingThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote, though we don’t have a release date just yet. Stay tuned!

Here’s the official synopsis as we know it so far:
“An advertising executive jumps back and forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza.”
Here’s what Gilliam had to say about the literary character (via the film’sofficial website) where he announced the long-in-development film wasfinally in post-productionlast year:

“Don Quixote is a dreamer, an idealist and a romantic, determined not to accept the limitations of reality, marching on regardless of setbacks, as we have done. We’ve been at it so long that the idea of actually finishing shooting this ‘clandestine’ film, is pretty surreal. Any sensible person would have given up years ago but sometimes pig-headed dreamers win in the end, so thank you to all of the ill paid fantasists and believers who have joined to make this longstanding dream a reality!”
