WhileDavid Corenswet’sSuperman may be flying up, up, and away at the box office, fans shouldn’t expect the same for another popular Man of Steel.Tom Welling, who portrayed the titular Kryptonian superhero in the iconic CW showSmallville, recently poured cold water on the chances of a reboot for the show, which aired its final season in 2011. So, it seems for now, fans will have to get their fill of Superman from the big screen.
Welling’s comments came during an appearance on the podcastInside of You,which is hosted by hisSmallvilleco-starMichael Rosenbaum, who portrayed Lex Luthor. “I’m smiling and saying it will probably never happen,” Welling said when asked ifSmallvilleco-creatorsAlfred GoughandMiles Millarwould ever reboot the show. “But I love the idea!”

Rosenbaum seemed to agree with this sentiment, adding, “It just doesn’t seem like our show is the type of show where that would happen.” This is likely devastating news for fans ofSmallvillegiven the show’s cult following; the seriesran for 10 seasonsfrom 2001 to 2011 and is widely considered one of the better adaptations of Superman that has ever been put on screen.
‘Smallville’ Depicted Superman’s Early Life
While Warner Bros.' current filmSupermanskips over the Man of Steel’s origin story,Smallvilledoes the opposite, and tells the tale of Superman/Clark Kent’s early life and childhood. It depicts Clarkgrowing up in the small townof Smallville, Kansas, where he gradually learns to develop his powers before his eventual journey to the Fortress of Solitude. While Luthor is in the show from the beginning,Smallvilledoesn’t depict Superman’s traditional love interest, Lois Lane, until later seasons, instead focusing on his relationship with neighbor Lana Lang.
Smallvillealso starsKristin Kreukas Lang andErica Duranceas Lane alongsideSam Jones III, Eric Johnson, Allison Mack, and more. The show’s creators, Gough and Millar, are also known for helming the Netflix smash-hitWednesday.In addition to creatingSmallville, they also executive produced the CW showfor their Millar Gough Ink banner.
