Nights in the city are moving home with the news that HBO’s classic seriesSex and the Cityis heading to pastures new in the shape of Netflix according toVariety, after a deal was reached between Warner Bros. and the streamer.Carrie Bradshaw and her three gal palswho tore up New York City for 6 years had been on Warner Bros.' streaming platform, Max, up until now, but all 94 episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series will head to Netflix in early April 2024. Crucially, though, the deal does not include the two feature films spun off from the main series, nor does it includeAnd Just Like That…,the sequel series which is currently exclusively available on Max.

The show, led bySarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin DavisandCynthia Nixon, focused on the lives and relationships of four women living in New York City.It was groundbreaking for its candid discussions of female sexuality, portraying women who were open about their desires and ambitions. It also showcased women who were powerful, successful and independent, and showed that they didn’t need the approval of men to do well in life. It also gained massive popularity due to the varied stylish wardrobes, particularly that of Parker’s Carrie, who narrates the series, and as a result, began to influence fashion trends in the modern world.

The show garnered significant acclaim during its run, culminating in a total of 7Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2001, which reflected the show hitting its peak midway through its run. Parker and Nixon won Outstanding Lead Actress and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the show’s final season, and the impact on fashion was acknowledged with two wins for Outstanding Costumes for a Series in 2002 and 2003.

What Happened After ‘Sex and the City’?

The series was followed by two feature films,Sex and the CityandSex and the City 2, neither of which truly captured the spirit of the show but began to showcase the stars as caricatures, with the exception of Cattrall’s Samantha, who was always the standout performer. A sequel series —also met with very mixed reviews—launched in 2022, without Cattrall in the cast, having fallen out with Parker in the intervening years. However, Cattrall did decide to appear in a very well-received cameo, and for fans, the hope is that we haven’t seen the last of Samantha Jones.

Sex and the Citywill drop on Netflix in April 2024. The two films, andAnd Just Like That…are streaming on Max now.
