Sawwent on a tear of movies from 2004 to 2010, but has lain dormant since. Back in 2014,we reportedthat producersMark BurgandOren Kouleswere interested in reviving the series. At the time the producers said:
We kind of wanted to build it up. Our goal is to go to Comic-Con, not next summer but the summer after [2016] with our heads up saying, ‘Here we go.’ James and Leigh are comfortable with the success they’ve had. And it’s time. James is in post on his movie. Leigh’s on post on [Insidious Chapter 3]. Everyone has time and it’s time.

Well we’re coming up on Comic-Con 2016, and it looks like the producers have found a directing duo to handle the latest installment in the horror franchise. According toBloody Disgusting, the directors of the tentatively titledSAW: Legacywill beDaybreakershelmersPeter and Michael Spierig. The good folks over at Collider Nightmares talked about the hiringhere.
While the Spierig Brothers were set to helmWinchester Mystery House(which could easily be an alternative title forSupernatural), that’s probably going on the backburner sinceSAW: Legacyis scheduled to shoot from September to October in Toronto.

There’s still no official confirmation that the Spierig Brothers have the gig, but I assume that could come sometime during Comic-Con next week. I’m not a huge fan of theSawfranchise, but the Spierigs are interesting directors.Daybreakersis a lot of fun, and their latest film,Predestinationis a twisty time-traveling thriller with a great performance from Sarah Snook.
So what lies ahead for theSaw(or is it now “SAW”) franchise? What will the Spierigs bring to the table, and is it time to change up what we expect from theSawmovies? Or will people be disappointed if they go to aSawfilm and don’t get torture porn? Sound off in the comments section.
