After a record-setting debut over the Memorial Day frame, Disney’sLilo & Stitchremake retained its crown this weekend. The movie is inching closer to a humongous domestic box office milestone, but haspassed the coveted half-billion mark at the global box office in 10 days flat. In doing so, it has overtaken past Disney films such asDumbo,Oz the Great and Powerful, andKenneth Branagh’s 2015 remake ofCinderella. Remarkably, Lilo & Stitch out-grossed the recentSnow Whiteremake’s entire run in its opening weekend.
With over $280 million domestically and another $330 million from overseas markets,Lilo & Stitch’scumulative global haul stands at $610 million. The movie was produced ona reported budget of $100 million, which is relatively low for the kind of tent pole that it is. For instance, last year’sMufusa: The Lion Kingcost over $200 million to produce, while the disastrousSnow Whiteremake is said to have come with a price tag of over $250 million. Directed byDean Fleischer Camp, who previously made the critically acclaimed A24 filmMarcel the Shell with Shoes On,Lilo & Stitchopened to mixed reviews, but seemed to please audiences.

The film’s critics’ score onRotten Tomatoessits at 70%, while its audience score is far more positive, at 90%.In his review, Collider’sAidan Kelleydescribed the movie as “redundant and frustrating.” If nothing else,Lilo & Stitch’s success should be seen as an encouraging sign for DreamWorks Animation; the studio is gearing up to enter live-action remake territory withHow to Train Your Dragon. LikeLilo & Stitch, the originalHow to Train Your Dragonisparticularly meaningful to millennial audiences. One of the biggest reasons thatSnow Whitecollapsed wasn’tthe misplaced and unfair hate directed at starRachel Zegler, but the property’s diminishing importance among audiences.
