TheJohn Wick franchiseexperienced a bit of a setback recently, with its first theatrical spin-off underperforming at the box office. Directed byLen Wiseman,From the World of John Wick: Ballerinabarely scraped past the $100 million mark at the global box office and has already been given an early release on PVOD. It’s now available to watch at home, where it’s beendominating the charts. But no amount of home video success can hide the fact that it wasn’t the hit that Lionsgate so desperately needed it to be. However, interest in the franchise remains as strong as ever, withJohn Wick: Chapter 4also creeping into the Netflix viewership charts.
According toFlixPatrol, the film claimed the ninth spot on July 4, earning over 100 points. In total, this month, the movie has accumulated 383 points. The movie beat outGodzilla x Kong: The New Empireon Netflix’s ranking list, which was topped by theCharlize Theron-led action sequelThe Old Guard 2. Released in 2023,John Wick 4emerged as the franchise’s top-grossing installment, witha cumulative global haul of nearly $450 million. It was produced ona reported budget of $100 million, which isn’t too far off fromBallerina’s $90 million reported budget.

Thefranchise as a whole has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, but the vast majority of this sum has come from the four main films. Each of them has also received critical acclaim, which has been a crucial factor in the series’ sustained success. This also makesthe John Wick franchisesomething of a unicorn in the contemporary blockbuster space, which is why Lionsgate left no stone unturned in makingBallerinathe best version of itself that it could possibly be. The studio brought John Wick directorChad Stahelskito rework the movie after Wiseman’s cut was reportedly met with a shrug. The move paid off on paper, withBallerinaearningpositive reviews, but, likeFuriousa: A Mad Max Sagabefore it, the film’s box office performance suggests that audiences aren’t really interested in spin-offs.
