Proving yet again that the Jurassic Park franchise is invaluable,Jurassic World Rebirthdeliveredan exceptional debutin the first weekend of release in theaters across the globe. The movie had an unusual production, with directorGareth Edwardsbeing hired rather late in the game; in many ways, it’s thedefinition of committee-driven filmmaking, with much of the pre-production work having commenced before Edwards was even brought on board. However, regular audiences don’t care about these things, and they showed up in massive numbers to check the movie out over the historically lucrative Fourth of July frame.

With around $147 million domestically and another $171 million from overseas markets,Jurassic World Rebirth’sglobal box office haul stands at a phenomenal $318 millionafter just one (extended) weekend. The movie was produced ona reported budget of $180 million, which is significantly lower than the $265 million thatJurassic World Dominionwas said to have cost. That movie opened to terrible reviews in 2022, but still managed to hit the $1 billion mark worldwide. However, the film’s performance prompted Universal to keep things firmly in control this time around.Dominion’s predecessor,Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, remains the second-most expensive film in history, with a reported budget of $432 million.

Each of the three previous movies managed to pass the coveted $1 billion mark globally, despite visibly diminishing returns, both critically and commercially. StarringScarlett Johansson,Mahershala Ali, andJonathan Bailey,Rebirthis written by the original film’sDavid Koeppand is expected to spawn a new series of movies. Reviews, however, haven’t exactly been glowing. Although the film has been better-received thanDominion, it’s still sitting at a mediocre 51% score onRotten Tomatoes.Rebirth’s audience score on the platform isn’t much better either, at 72%.In his review, Collider’sAidan Kelleyquestioned the need for another sequel, but praised Edwards as being its biggest highlight.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Has Already Beaten Big Blockbusters

Rebirth’s $318 million global haul puts it ahead of several major movies, such asKnives Out($312 million) andThe Conjuring($316 million). It’s passing the action-adventureThe Last Airbender($319 million) as we speak. Directed byM. Night Shyamalan,The Last Airbendernearly destroyed his career, scoring a terrible 5% score onRotten Tomatoesand earning the ire of audiences. Shyamalan worked his way back up and has now regained lost ground thanks to a string of modest-budget thrillers.
