The dino DNA is back in theaters with Universal Pictures’Jurassic World Rebirth,which reinvigorates theJurassic Parkfilm franchise started in 1993 bySteven Spielberg.But after just one weekend in theaters,Rebirthhas passed up one of Spielberg’s most acclaimed films at the box office: the film has now grossed more than the iconic director’s 1977 UFO classic,Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
As of this article’s publication,Jurassic World Rebirthhas grossed $322 million at the worldwide box office, according toBox Office Mojo, including . This places it firmly in the top 400 films of all time, and also surpassesClose Encounter’stotal global total of $306 million. However, it should be noted that this figure is not adjusted for inflation; $306 million in 1977 dollars is worth about $1.6 billion today. If taking that into account, thenRebirthtechnically still has far to go.
This is likely no big issue for Spielberg, who not only executive producedRebirth,but has also helmed some of the most iconic films of all time. Among them isClose Encounters,which currently holds a 90% critic’s score and 85% audience score onRotten Tomatoes. The film, which starredRichard Dreyfuss,depicts arural man who inadvertently encounters a UFOas it passes nearby him. After that, he becomes obsessed with UFOs and works to avoid the authorities to find out more about them. The film came just two years after Spielberg’s classicJawsand remains a staple of the UFO/alien genre.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Tells a New Story
Jurassic World Rebirthgot off to a slow start at the box office but has since been drawing in audiences. The film tells a brand new story in theJurassicsaga and has an all-new cast, includingScarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo,Rupert Friend,and more. It depicts an effort by a team of researchers to collect blood from dinosaurs living on an island near the equator as part of a project to develop a new heart disease medication. But things go awry, as always, when the dinosaurs attack, and the team comes face-to-face with some mutated creatures they weren’t expecting.
