Netflix just dropped the first trailer for their upcoming animated seriesJurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, about a group of kids trying to survive a dinosaur outbreak in the titular theme park. And it looks… exactly likeJurassic World, only with worse-looking dinosaurs. But maybe that’s not a bad thing?
The 8-episode series, from Netflix and DreamWorks Animation and executive producersSteven SpielbergandColin Trevorrow, follows six teenagers trapped on the other side of Isla Nublar during the events ofJurassic World. It’s got big “Season 2 ofLost” energy, which isn’t necessarily a warning sign, but the CG animation feels weirdly dated (I kept thinking of Jimmy Neutron while watching the trailer). That said, it does tease some action setpieces that look genuinely exciting, and I’ll give anything featuring dinosaurs the benefit of the doubt. Plus, you could do worse than developing Jurassic World into an all-ages adventure series featuringJameela Jamilas a camp counselor.
The voice cast for the series includesPaul-Mikél Williams(Westworld) as resident dinosaur expert Darius;Jenna Ortega(You)as social media sensation Brooklynn;Ryan Potter(Big Hero 6: The Series) as self-appointed VIP Kenji;Raini Rodriguez(Bunk’d) as gregarious and enthusiastic Sammy;Sean Giambrone(The Goldbergs) as sensitive and bookish Ben; andKausar Mohammed(Silicon Valley) as world-class athlete Yaz.Jameela Jamil(Legendary) andGlen Powell(Top Gun: Maverick) recur as camp counselors Roxie and Dave.Scott Kreamer(Cleopatra in Space) andAaron Hammersley(Star vs. the Forces of Evil) serve as executive producers and showrunners.
The show premieres September 18th on Netflix. Check out the trailer below, and for moreJurassic Worldnews, watch whatJurassic World: Dominiondirector Trevorrow had to say aboutbuilding animatronic dinosaursfor the upcoming sequel.
