AsLandmancontinues production on its second season around Fort Worth,Billy Bob Thorntonisn’t shy about how much the series means to him— and how long he hopes to stick around. In a new interview with Gold Derby, the Oscar winner opened up about returning to Tommy Norris, working withTaylor Sheridan, and what it’s like to reunite with a true Western icon:Sam Elliott. When asked if he sees himself riding withLandmanfor several more seasons, Thornton gave us all the news we wanted to hear: “Absolutely,” he said. “I told Taylor, I said, ‘As long as you want me around, I’m here for this.’” That kind of commitment says everything, especially coming from a guy who’s had his pick of prestige projects over the years.

“I’ll be around as long as they want me and as long as I’m able,” he added, joking that someday he may just end up likePeter BoyleinEverybody Loves Raymond— “sitting in a chair and eating cake.”But there’s more intensity to come before he gets that cake. Fans still haven’t forgotten theLandmanSeason 1 finale, where Thornton’s Tommy Norris is tortured by cartel members in a gasoline-drenched interrogation from hell. Asked about how he approached such an intense moment, Thornton said he leaned on his own life experience.

“I’ve had a lot of life experience. I’ve been around some pretty weird things, so you just kind of draw on those.”

Who Does Sam Elliott Play in ‘Landman’?

One of the big draws forLandmanSeason 2?Sam Elliott. The1883andTombstonelegendhas officially joined the cast, though details on his character are still under wraps. For Thornton, it’s not just another casting announcement of a wily old veteran, it’s a long-awaited reunion with someone he deeply respects. “[Elliott’s] always been a mentor and a hero ofmine,” Thornton said. “I love the guy, we have a real special relationship in real life anyway.” Although Elliott hasn’t filmed much yet,his presence on setis already making a difference. “It’s so good to see him,” Thornton added. “He lights my day up.”
