Moviegoers may not be feeling superhero fatigue, but composerHans Zimmeris. After scoringChristopher Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogy,The Amazing Spider-Man 2,Man of Steel, and nowBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zimmer declared in an interview withBBC’s HARDtalk:

“I have officially retired from the superhero business … I didBatman Beginswith Chris 12 years ago, so theDark Knighttrilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life,” he said in part. “This onewas very hard for me to do, to try to find new language.”

In addition to ending his long string of composing superhero films, Zimmer has taken a short reprieve from scoring films in general. Though he’ll bere-teaming with NolanforDunkirk,Zimmer told us during an interviewforBatman v Supermanthat he’s going on the road for a while. Who can blame him after the daunting task of composing the music for the first live-action blockbuster to feature a clash of DC titans?

During our interview, he said of writing theBatman v Supermanthemes withJunkie XL:

For me it was doubly daunting because I’ve already done 11 years of Christian Bale and Chris Nolan Batman, and…This work keeps resonating in my head. I didn’t want to betray what I did in that time. You know, I didn’t want to go and belittle it or say, “Oh, this is all different,” or, “Forget about it. Let’s just start again.”

Zimmer isn’t the first to feel the burn.Joss Whedon, after helmingThe AvengersandAvengers: Age of Ultron, on top of consulting with the other Marvel filmmakers for various post-credits stingers and teases, is pretty much done with the MCU. Though, he did tease the possibility of coming back down the road. We’ll see howJoeandAnthony Russo(the duo behindCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, its follow-upCivil War, and the two-partInfinity War) and/orZack Snyder(who helmedMan of SteelandBatman v Superman, will helmJustice League: Part One, and is a producer on a number of other DC films) fair under similar pressure.
