WithGuardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios and directorJames Gunnneeded to find the perfect cast to bring to life their misfit bunch of a-holes if they were going to turn the oddball and relatively unknown property into an MCU-sized hit. Fortunately for all of us, they knocked it out of the park with their stellar lineup, from core castmembersChris Pratt(Star-Lord),Zoe Saldana(Gamora),Dave Bautista(Drax),Bradley Cooper(Rocket), andVin Diesel(Groot) to supporting players likeBenicio Del Toro(The Collector), Glenn Close (Nova Prime) andJohn C. Reilly(Dey), and every role in between.

to fit all the right pieces together, Marvel no doubt conducted a pretty elaborate casting process. Now, thanks to the Phase 2 Blu-Ray Box Set, which arrives on shelves December 8th (you can check out theunboxing here), we’ve got a glimpse into that process with Pratt and Bautista’s video audition for their roles as Star Lord and Drax the Destroyer, respectively. The pair reads a scene from the final film, though with some noticeable differences, and it’s an interesting insight into how their roles and the script were finessed and fine-tuned by the time the short the actual film. Watch for yourself in the video below.

Judging by Pratt’s makeshift, but distinctly Star-Lord-y attire and Bautista’s commitment to full body makeup – thought lacking the prosthetic work – plus the fact that they’re using actual lines from the movie rather than made-up sides, I’d bet this screen test was pretty far along into the audition process. What’s most interesting is how the script was tightened up, especially the comedic beats, for the final project. There’s also a pretty significant difference in the line delivery, which is hushed and private in the audition, giving the scene an entirely difference tonality that lacks the sense of urgency we got in the final product. Check out the difference in the clip below.
