Don’t expect the trailers and TV spots forGuardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2to give away major plot points—at least, as long as writer/directorJames Gunngets his way. Indeed, in a recent interview discussing thejust-released trailerfor the thrillerThe Belko Experiment—which Gunn wrote—the director discussed the difference between crafting a trailer for a film likeBelko, where you don’t have to worry about spoiling major plot or character developments, and putting together a trailer forGuardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Speaking withTHR, Gunn said he’s keenly aware that as soon as a newGuardians 2trailer is released, the internet is going to pick it apart for hints and clues:

“WithGuardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie’s about. And there’s a lot of mysteries inGuardians 2.”

Indeed, the filmmaker said he and Marvel Studios are in the process of deciding how much to reveal in the trailers forGuardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2:

“We were talking about how much to give away — and we’re not going to give away very much… WithGuardians, it’s such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It’s like, ‘God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make.”

Gunn went on to reveal that the now-iconic first teaser trailer forGuardians of the Galaxy, which featured “Hooked on a Feeling”, almost didn’t get released. It “tested not very well” and the marketing department had created an alternate, misleading, cheesy trailer that teased a different kind of movie, but Marvel went ahead and released the “Hooked on a Feeling” trailer anyway and, well, the rest is history.

But Marvel and Disney’s marketing game plan thus far has consisted of revealing an onslaught of trailers, clips, and TV spots in the month before the new movie is released, giving fans copious amounts of new footage to thumb through. So I’ll be interested to see the direction Marvel and Disney take onGuardians 2, especially if Gunn is able to convince them to keep the film’s biggest surprises under wraps.
