The Mountain may have met his match onGame of Thrones, as it looks like a blast from his past is making his way to Westeros. Take this news with a grain of salt for the moment because the intel comes from an unnamed source speaking to a newspaper in Northern Ireland, but it’d make for a pretty cool face-off if correct: UFC fighterConor McGregoris reportedly joining the show for either Season 7 or Season 8.
According to a source fromThe Sunday Life, “It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons ofGame of Thrones. He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of theGame of Thronesdirectors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”
It’s unknown what role he’s reportedly eyed for or whether the character would actually battle The Mountain, but McGregor has battledHafþór Júlíus“Thor”Björnssonin the ring. Björnsson, as fans know, plays Cersei’s newly zombified muscle onGame of Thrones. McGregor posted video of his spar with the 6-foot-9-inches weightlifter to YouTube. He faired far better than Oberyn, may that sultry sun king rest in peace.

McGregor later said of the video duringa media luncheon, “It was a lot of fun. That’s a big man – 6-foot-9, 400 pounds – and I still folded him up. I was hitting him with some shots; I had to hit him with some shots. He was trying to hit me, as well. People say, ‘He was taking it easy.’ He tried to grab me and tried to pull my head off and I defended, freed the head. I was like, ‘This motherfucker is so big, I have to start smacking him to the body.’ … I sunk him good. I caught him good. Not even a Mountain can take these shots from me.”
AsThe New York Postpoints out, HBO is filmingGame of Thronesin and around Dublin, which is McGregor’s hometown. So, it doesn’t seem all that difficult for him to reach the set.
