Vanessa Kirbyhas officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe inFantastic Four: First Steps— and she’s already gearing up for the next big crossover event,Avengers: Doomsday. But in betweencommanding force fields and giving rousing superhero speecheswhile holding a baby (yes, really — wait until you see the birth scene), Kirby says one thing has grounded the experience: working alongsideRobert Downey Jr. In a recent conversation on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, Kirby couldn’t say enough about what it’s been like sharing the screen with Iron Man — or rather Doctor Doom — himself.
“He’s the most incredible human being—soulful, deep, kind. He’s been an amazing leader to us, considering we’re the newbies, you know, and a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He’s just doing the most amazing work.”

Kirby, who plays Sue Storm a.k.a. the Invisible Woman, is currently filmingAvengers: Doomsdaywhile pregnant, something she says Marvel Studios, and the movie’s directors,Joe and Anthony Russo, have been incredibly supportive about. “It’s been the coolest thing to be shooting an Avengers movie while pregnant,” she shared. “The Russos andKevin Feigeand the whole team have been utterly amazing.”

While Marvel, of course, keeps the details ofDoomsdaytightly under wraps (even from its cast),Kirby saysshe’s placed full trust in the directors. “It’s been so easy to trust them because they so know the world better than anyone,” she said of Joe and Anthony Russo. “They describe it like they’re making a recipe, right? There’s a recipe of different ingredients. It’s unbelievable that these Avengers movies work in such a beautiful way.”
Though she didn’t confirm how much of her role is complete, she revealed she’s “going back to do more,” which only adds to the excitement thatSue Storm — and based on the film, her son, Franklin— will have a major part to play in what’s being billed as the darkest Avengers film yet. With Kirby embracing the cosmic and the personal inFantastic Fourand stepping into a universe that Downey helped define, she seems poised to become a major emotional anchor in Marvel’s next chapter. Whether she’s commanding prisms of light or holding the team together from the inside out, Sue Storm has arrived—and she’s not alone. The Fantastic Four: First Stepsis playing in theaters now.
