Let’s keepDeadpoolin the conversation, shall we? It’s still worth talking about if only because the film’s box office performance continues to surprise. Just this past weekend,Deadpoolbecame only the third R-rated film to cross the $300 million mark in domestic tallies. (The Passion of the ChristandAmerican Sniperstill hold onto #1 and #2 respectively.) It’s also making moves on the list ofsuperhero origin films, having surpassedMan of Steelduring the week and closing in onIron Man’s$318.4 million total for the coveted number-three spot.
Deadpool’s$311.2 million also makes it the number one film in theX-Menfranchisefor the domestic box office, and is just shy of surpassingX-Men: The Last Stand’sdomestic take when adjusted for inflation. It’s a bit further out, to the tune of about $75 million, from overtakingX-Men: Days of Future Paston the unadjusted worldwide box office chart.Deadpool’stotal take is $673.7 million, while the latest effort fromBryan Singer’sMarvel mutant universe still stands at $747.9 million. Perhaps both of those films will be dwarfed byX-Men: Apocalypsewhen it opens May 27th.

The difference, as has often been reported, is thatDeadpoolwas not released in 3D and therefore did not enjoy the pumped-up dollar amounts thanks to that format’s inflated price tag. It also never made its way into China’s theaters, missing out on a hugely significant portion of the global moviegoing market. (I’m predicting thatDeadpoolwill become perhaps China’s most illegally downloaded film of 2016, if it isn’t already.) Oh, and as you might have heard,Deadpoolwas rated R, which is often touted as box office poison.
If you wanted some more evidence that R-rated superhero films can be done right,Deadpoolis now the 12th bestcomic book adaptation/superhero moviein terms of domestic box office take; it’s also Fox’s only property in the top 17 films in this category. As for Marvel, it’s thecomic company’s 10th best performanceat only $1 million behindIron Man 2.
