WithCrimson Peak,Guillermo Del Toro’s anticipated return to classical horror following the still-pretty-awesomePacific Rim, the Mexican helmer digs into the grand history of haunted house films that denoted his childhood and teen years. Every scene that’s been revealed from Del Toro’s latest has evoked eerie images and sequences from such classics asThe Uninvited,The Innocents,The Haunting, andThe Changeling, to name just a few big titles of the sub-genre. And yet, the scenes that have been teased thus far in trailers and clips have made it clear that this is every bit a Guillermo Del Toro film, marked by his particular, riotous use of color and his obsession with mechanics and architecture, which played a huge part in his previous ghostly masterwork,The Devil’s Backbone.

The five new clips released from the film, all five of which seemingly center onMia Wasikowska’s Edith’s first encounters with entering and living in the titular, dilapidated haunted mansion, also highlight how the director has grown all the more bold in his imagery.

Even after watching those clips, it seems unclear what exactly binds siblings Lucille and Thomas Sharpe (Jessica ChastainandTom Hiddleston) to their haunted home, and what Edith’s role in their cryptic doings is, and that’s all for the better. The great thrill of all of Del Toro’s film is as much about the revelation of emotional damages and alliances, betrayals and unexpected salvations, as it is about his unmatched sense of character design, framing, and lighting, which all seem to be key to his latest film’s inarguable allure.

Crimson Peakwill see release nationwide on October 16th.

On top of the clips, here are some new images from Del Toro’s latest, highlighting the aforementioned stars, as well asCharlie Hunnam:
