Since Disney is currently in the midst of all thingsStar Wars: The Force Awakens, some of the attention has been taken off of Marvel Studios' next picture,Captain America: Civil War. While we already know thatChris Evans’third solo outing as the Patriotic Powerhouse is going to be positively packed with a cast of big names and characters, starDaniel Brühlhas been more vocal than most about his villainous role in the film.

While promoting his next movie,Burnt- theJohn Wells-directed cooking comedy/drama starringBradley Cooper- Brühl spoke to theU.K. Business Insiderabout his upcoming comic book role. He’s been pretty open in the past about playing infamous Marvel villain Baron Zemo, but now we’re starting to get a sense of how the baddie is going to be brought to life. Perhaps the biggest surprise? He won’t be wearing his very recognizable purple mask:

“He does not wear the mask.”

I appreciate how blunt and to-the-point Brühl is when answering these questions. While mask or no mask may not seem like that big of a deal, Baron Zemo has a particularly odd backstory when it comes to his choice of costumed accoutrement. As our ownEvan Valentineexplained in hisrundown of Baron Zemo’s comic book history, Baron Heinrich Zemo, during his time in the Nazi party, created “Adhesive X”, a super-sticky chemical that eventually spilled on Zemo in a battle with Captain America, leaving him unable to remove his purple mask from his face. Yeah, it would make sense that Marvel wouldn’t stick (pardon the pun) with that particular character trait. Brühl went on to explain just what wewillsee of Zemo in the new movie:

“You would be surprised, it’s different than what you’d think. It’s loosely connected to this character. But that’s what I like about the Marvel guys, some of the characters and things they’re dealing with always reference to current events so my character is from a different area than you would think.”

We likely won’t get to see exactly how much screentime Brühl gets as Zemo inCaptain America: Civil Waruntil it opens on August 24, 2025. In the meantime, check out some of our recent coverage onCaptain America: Civil Warprovided at the following links:
