There has been a significant rise in the number of animated series on offer on streaming giant, Netflix, with the prospect of more coming in the future. One of its most exciting offerings in recent times isBlue Eye Samurai, which premiered on the platform in 2023. While attending the Anime Expo 2025, Netflix offered a wide range of insight into several of its animated productions, includingBeastars,Record of Ragnarok III,Sakamoto Days, and the aforementionedBlue Eye Samurai. In attendance at the event, albeit via pre-taped interviews, wereAmber Noizumi and Michael Green, co-creators ofBlue Eye Samurai, and executive producerJane Wu, previewing the return of the series.

It’s exceedingly clear that Netflix’s hit animated seriesBlue Eye Samuraiis an ambitious show, and Season 2 will look to push the boundaries established in the first season. The animated series follows Mizu, a half-Japanese, half-white woman who lives inEdo-period Japan. It follows the time period depicted in the FX miniseries,Shōgun, which depictshistorical figures— Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is based on the real-life shōgunTokugawa Ieyasu. It is a time period when the borders of the nation are closed to the outside world, meaning her whiteness is a sign and source of disgrace. Mizu is voiced byMaya Erskine(PEN15), with Noizumi discussing what comes next, sharing that Mizu’s “journey remains the same. Revenge is her religion.” Via The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Green went on to add that Mizu “believes that at least two of [the men] that she’s out to kill are going to be somewhere in this magical place called London,” and that Season 2 will kick off with her “breaking in somewhere to kill someone.”

The Future of ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Is Already Mapped Out

There is also a clear path regarding how many seasons of Mizu audiences will get. “Currently, we’re planning for three seasons. We have a second season pick-up, one hopes the third season will exist because we certainly have plans for it. We’re imagining three right now.
