Apple TV+’sFoundationhas become one of the most acclaimed sci-fi shows on television— and with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for its second season, the pressure is high as Season 3 approaches. But even as excitement builds for the show’s return on July 11, the future of the series beyond that remains surprisingly unclear, even for its stars.
Based on the sprawling book series byIsaac Asimov,Foundationfollows the epic struggle to preserve civilization amid the inevitable fall of a galactic empire. Since its debut in 2021, the series has been lauded for its ambition, visual spectacle, and rich character arcs. But while Deadline reported back in February 2025 that Apple had quietly greenlit Season 4 — withIan Goldberg(Fear the Walking Dead) stepping in as showrunner followingDavid S. Goyer’sdeparture— the cast still seems to be waiting for official confirmation.

Speaking to TechRadar,Jared Harris(Hari Seldon) andLou Llobell(Gaal Dornick) admitted they haven’t been looped in about what’s next — despite the rumors swirling.
“I probably know less than you because you’re scouring the trades every day,” Harris joked. “You know more about it than I do. I’m just an actor told everything. We’re the last people to find out what’s going on!”

Llobell echoed the uncertainty but stayed optimistic: “If that’s true, I’m going to be so excited. I’m hopeful, but who knows? If it gets that far —Foundationhaving eight seasons— we would be so lucky.”
Goyer has previously said his vision forFoundationspans eight seasons, but with the change in showrunner and Apple remaining tight-lipped, even the show’s cast is waiting for clarity.
What Can We Expect from ‘Foundation’ Season 3?
Meanwhile,Lee Pace, who plays the empire’s cloned ruler Cleon, is already deep into discussing what Season 3 will bring. In a recent Esquire interview,Pace teaseda big evolution for Cleon XXIV, especially after the time jump that once again shakes up the show’s dynamic.
“[Cleon XXIV] is as different from his brothers as we all are from each other. There is a core that is the same and an interpretation that is completely different,” Pace explained. “He’s not trying to mess with the galaxy; he wants nothing to do with it. In this next season, I had a really great time annihilating that belief [that he is the sum total of the galaxy].”
