TheStar Warsuniverse is no stranger to venturing into uncharted creative territory, and according toAndorshowrunnerTony Gilroy, the next frontier could be something much darker — and much scarier. In a new interview, Gilroy confirmed that Lucasfilm and Disney are developing a horror project set in the Star Wars universe, which is a big leap when it comes to what has, to date, been a mostly family friendly franchise. Gilroy, while speaking to Business Insider on the red carpet forAndorseason two in London, was asked how he would handle aStar Warsstory grounded in horror, before he replied surprisingly:
“They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.”

Though he didn’t elaborate on whether the horror project would be a film or a series, the confirmation is enough to get fans speculating, and to be clear, Gilroy did not state that he would be involved with the project in any way, but it’s still interesting to hear this come from someone so high up and respected within boththe world of Star Wars, Lucasfilm, and within the halls of Disney itself.
What Would a ‘Star Wars’ Horror Look Like?
Well,The Rise of Skywalkerwas one, but only to fans of good movies. While nothing official has been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm — and let’s be honest, this will probably go the same way asRian Johnson’s trilogy— theStar Warsuniverse has toyed with horror elements before — most notably in comic books and novels likeDeath Troopers, a zombie-filledStar Warsnovel set on a derelict prison ship, andRed Harvest,a horror prequel filled with some very angry Sith. But a full blown horror projct would be a first, so whether that means something like a cosmic body horror set in the Unknown Regions, or even some kind of possession story, it seems like Lucasfilm and Disney want to try something new.
And that’s no bad thing, because if we useAndoras an example,Star Warsdoes seem to do better when it tries to embrace a mixture of genres. The universe is there to introduce all sorts of characters, and ideas, and it’s nice when we see more than just the core characters or even just Jedi and Sith in our story.

AndorSeason 2 will premiere with three episodeson April 22.
Prequel series to Star Wars' ‘Rogue One’. In an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.
