In news that is shocking to absolutely no one, FX has orderedAmerican Horror StorySeason 7, renewing the anthology series for yet another installment. This comes as the show, created byRyan MurphyandBrad Falchuk, is in the midst of its most secretive season since its inaugural installment, with no casting, plot, or even title information for Season 6 revealed ahead of its premiere last month. We finally learned that this season is titledAmerican Horror Story: Roanoke, and is set up like one of those A&E ghost docuseries withAndre Holland,Lily Rabe, andAdina Porterperforming talking head interviews whileCuba Gooding Jr.,Sarah Paulson, andAngela Bassettstar in “dramatic reenactment” portions. However, Murphy has already teased a shocking twist coming in Episode 6 that threatens to upend this season even more.
American Horror Storyhas been one of the cornerstones of the resurgence of FX has a worthy competitor to prestige channels like HBO and AMC. The series debuted in 2011, with Murphy and Co. not revealing that it was an anthology series until after the season finale. Since then, each season resets with a new cast, plot, and setting, and it looks like Murphy and Falchuk are nowhere near running out of ideas.

Indeed, Murphy recently toldEWthat he’s even working on a season more secretive thanRoanoke:
“It’s my secret season. I’ve been working with a writer on a season that only he and I know. It’s like a two-year project that we’ll continue to work on the sly and not tell anybody. I don’t know when it will [air] but it’s also an experiment. It’s a different way of doing it. It’s one person writing all episodes. I don’t know if it’s going to work but it’s like, well, let’s try that. We might get them done and shoot them on the sly and drop it.”

That would certainly be something, but it doesn’t sound like that secret season will be next year’s installment. Murphy said in the same interview that he already knows what Season 7 is, and no, he’s not telling.
I’ve watched every season ofAHSthus far despite the fact that the quality is frustratingly hit or miss. Most of the seasons start out strong then quickly lose steam, butRoanokeseems to be testing the audience’s patience with a whole lotta nothin’ going on at the moment. It’s possible the big Episode 6 twist will make it all worthwhile, and I foundHotelto be the show’s best season since it’s first, so I’m sticking around like a sucker.
