Divergentwas a so-so capitalization on theHunger Gamescraze, but its follow-up,Insurgentfell to the lows of a forgettable dystopian something or other. In truth, Roth’s source material isn’t the strongest of foundations for a major feature film franchise, but having read the books I’m both perplexed and intrigued by what look to be massive changes in this third film, which appears to run up through the entirety of the trilogy’s story, leaving the final installment,Ascendant, a major question mark. Indeed,Schwentke recently exited the director’s chairofAscendant, so Lionsgate and Summit are working quickly to find a replacement so they can get filming underway this summer for the film’s 2017 release date.
