Castlevania: Nocturnereturned with a second season that far surpasses its predecessor. The show follows Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel), the strongest member of a long line of vampire hunters, and his allies as they attempt to stop the threat of Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente), a powerful queen who has declared herself the “Vampire Messiah.” Sadly, a third season has not yet been greenlit, meaning fans don’t know whether this thrilling show will continue.

Season 2 ends with something of a clean slate for most characters, allowing it to feel like a series finale in case a third season doesn’t happen. If, however, Netflix decides to renew this show for another chapter (and it absolutely should), then Season 2 ofNocturneoffers enough hints and leaves enough threads open for future exploration. This list will rank the storylines for a potential Season 3 ofCastlevania: Nocturne, ranking them based on how likely they are to happen and how exciting they would be.

Castlevania: Nocturne

10Richter Versus Olrox

There’s still a debt to pay between these two.

Castlevania: Nocturnebegins with Olrox (Zahn McClarnon) fighting and killing Julia Belmont (Sophie Skelton) in front of a young Richter. The two then start a decades-long rivalry that revives upon their reunion in Machecoul, France, nine years later. Although they fight on the same side against Erzsebet, with Olrox providing crucial assistance in the end, Richter still vows to kill him “one day.”

By the end ofCastlevania: NocturneSeason 2,Richter is the most powerful Belmontand undoubtedly capable of killing Olrox. However, the nature of their rivalry and the complicated dynamic they have developed allows fora more complex story. Season 3 will see them both in the New World, with Richter in Saint-Domingue and Olrox and Mizrak (Aron Neil) perhaps somewhere in the United States (it’s unlikely they’ll stay in Europe). Thus, these two rivals cancontinue their dynamic and maybe even face each other in battle one final time.

9Politically Charged Battles Against Evil

‘Castlevania’ has never been afraid of going political.

Season 2 ends with Richter, Annette (Thus Mbedu), and Edouard (Sydney James Harcourt) setting sail for Saint-Domingue to continue the fight for freedom there. Meanwhile. Maria (Pixie Davis), Juste (Iain Glen), and Alucard (James Callis) remain in Paris to aid in the French Revolution, which is about to enter its most violent leg.

Castlevaniahasnever been afraid to address political issues, including racism, religious intolerance, hypocrisy, and sexuality. Thus, Season 3 ofNocturneis bound to include these topics in its storylines, especially Annette’s fight against slavery and white supremacy. Season 1 placed the cards for a powerful story aboutthe fight for freedom against greed and cruelty, allowing for a third season that fully addresses the horrors of slavery. As for the Paris storyline, the Reign of Terror allows fora poignant story about the true meaning of justiceand the ease with which corruption can overtake even the most just causes.

Annette reaches out with a glowing hand in Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2

8Separate Stories for Everyone

It’s a great, big world, after all.

The original show was very much divided into two halves, with Seasons 1 and 2 following the fight against Dracula (Graham McTavish) and Seasons 3 and 4 telling more loosely connected stories. The ending toCastlevania: NocturneSeason 2seems to hint at a similar approach for Season 3, especially considering all its main characters are on separate journeys.

Although there’s always a chance for a more connected narrative through a time jump or a big bad who connects all the pieces, Season 3 could also divide every major character and follow their individual stories. We could be looking at a more international seasonset in Saint-Domingue, with Richter, Annette, and Edouard; Paris, with Maria, Juste, and Alucard; somewhere in the Americas, with Olrox and Mizrak; and perhaps on a new location with Tera (Nastassja Kinski), who is out to find herself.

Maria opening dark portals around her in Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2

7Maria’s Journey to the Dark Side

Walking the line between light and darkness.

One of the highlights of Season 2 was Maria’s journey of self-discovery and experimentation with the dark side.Maria’s powers inCastlevania: Nocturnehave always been something of a mystery; she draws energy and creatures from a seemingly different universe, and they obey her commands. They also seem to be connected to her, so if they get hurt, so does she.

Season 2 ends with Maria in a better place and back to her previous self, fighting for freedom in the Revolution. However, her dark side is still there, and the guilt of murdering her father, the Abbot (Richard Dormer), might come back to haunt her. Fans of the video game series will know that Richter goes through a bit of a dark journey during his second canonical appearance, but with how much groundwork the show already laid, perhaps it’ll be Maria who descends into corruptionin a potential Season 3.

Edouard as a night creature singing in Castlevania Nocturne

6Life as a Night Creature

What’s it like to be a creature from Hell living on Earth?

Edouard is among the most intriguing characters inCastlevaniaas a whole. After his untimely death in Season 1, he was resurrected by the Abbot as a night creature, with much of his subsequent arc dealing with him rediscovering his purpose and coming to terms with his new existence.

Not much is known about night creaturesother than the fact they’re literally spirits from hell who occupy a deceased body. Edouard and most ofNocturne’s night creatures remember who they were when they were alive, allowing them to fight for the same purposes. However, the true nature of these tragic creatures remains a question mark, making Edouard a crucial character for future seasons, especially if a potential third season explores the topic of Hell in more detail.

5Old Man Coyote

Is the Devil really coming to ‘Castlevania?’

And speaking of Hell,Castlevania: NocturneSeason 2 threw a curve ball by introducing the literal Devil into the story. Throughout the season, a shadowy figure stalks the Abbot’s church and eventually claims his remains once Maria kills him. Olrox calls him “Old Man Coyote,” also referring to him as “Mephistopheles.” When Mizrak is lethally wounded, the shadow comes to claim him, but Olrox denies him.

The Devil has been depictedmany times on screen, and it always leads to something interesting. If the Prince of Darkness is indeed coming toCastlevania, that opens many exciting possibilities. Annette’s connection to the spirit world and Olrox’s familiarity with him should prove useful in the battle against this mighty being. Chances areOld Man Coyote will be a major antagonist for the story, opening the door for Richter or Maria’s descent into darkness and the potential return of an infamous character.

4Tera’s Dark Path

A vampire’s a vampire, at the end of the day.

Tera ends Season 1 ofCastlevania: Nocturnewillingly becoming a vampire to spare Maria from a similar fate. She then spends most of Season 2 coming to terms with her new nature and redefining her relationship with Maria. The season ends with Tera looking at Maria from a distance, with Old Man Coyote’s shadow behind her.

As painful as it sounds, it’s likely thatTera will become an antagonist if not necessarily a villain, in a potential third season ofCastlevania: Nocturne. Her journey to the dark side was heavily hinted at in Season 2, and her inexperience with the dark side makes her vulnerable to the Devil’s manipulations. As a powerful Speaker,Tera would be a dangerous opponentfor Richter and his allies, and her connection with them would only make the battle tougher.

3The Abbott 2.0

He got dragged to Hell, but can he come back?

As previously mentioned, the Abbot was killed by his daughter, Maria, for revenge against his numerous crimes. The Abbot was the forgemaster behind Erzsebet’s army of night creatures, and his deluded and borderline deranged views on the church and religion led him to extreme fanatism.

With Old Man Coyote set to play a role in a potential Season 3 ofCastlevania: Nocturne, the Abbot can return either as a night creature or as something else entirely. After all, the Devil claimed his charred remains, meaning the Abbot’s soul is in the Prince of Darkness' possession. Perhaps the resurrected Abbot teams up with his former lover, Tera, to do Old Man Coyote’s bidding? Whatever form the Abbot takes when next we see him, chances are it won’t be good news for Richter and his allies.

2Dracula’s Return

Where is the King of Vampires?

Dracula isthe most powerful vampire inCastlevania, and there’s really no argument there. He is the main villain of the original show’s first two seasons, who dies at the hands of his son, Alucard, during the Season 2 finale. However, he eventually returns to Earth with his beloved wife, Lisa (Emily Swallow), at the end of the series.

Castlevania: Nocturnehas made no mention of Dracula’s whereabouts, and it’s unclear if Alucard even knows his father came back from Hell (it’s unlikely Lisa is still alive unless Dracula turned her into a vampire). Fans of the games know Dracula is the constant villain of most entries, emerging every generation to fight a new Belmont. Might Season 3 ofNocturnedo something similar andhave Richter and Alucard fight Dracula? Or perhaps good old Vlad has experienced a change of heart in the past 300 years and insteadjoins them in the fight against Old Man Coyote? He is the Devil, after all, meaning Richter will need all the help he can get.

Castlevania

1Symphony of the Night

Alucard takes the spotlight.

Castlevaniafans have long been waiting for an adaptation ofthe classic gameSymphony of the Night. A direct adaptation ofRondo of Blood(the game that introduces Richter Belmont),Symphony of the Nightuses Alucard as the protagonist and features a mind-controlled Richter, who plans to resurrect Dracula so the two can fight for eternity.

The Netflix version ofCastlevaniadoesn’t directly adapt any games and instead uses characters and elements to tell a grander and more dramatic story. Indeed, the ending ofSymphony of the Nighthas already been used in Season 2 of the originalCastlevania, with Alucard forgiving his father before killing him. However, certain elements, mainlyRichter’s manipulation and descent into darkness, can and should be adapted into a future season ofCastlevania: Nocturne. It will also be nice to seeAlucard front and center as the undisputed protagonistof a season after acting as a co-lead for much ofCastlevania. AdaptingSymphony of the Nightseems likethe safest bet for a third season ofCastlevania: Nocturne, but only time will tell if the team behind the show actually does it.
